Professor of African Studies at the University of Basel

ELÍSIO MACAMO


Elísio Macamo is Full Professor of African Studies at the University of Basel, a member of the Council of the International African Institute in London and a former director of the Centre for African Studies and former Head of the Social Sciences Department at the University of Basel.

Previously, he taught development sociology at the University of Bayreuth, where he was a founding member of the Bayreuth International Graduate School of African Studies.

He was born and grew up in Mozambique. He studied in Maputo (Mozambique), Salford, and London (UK) and Bayreuth (Germany). He holds an MA degree in Translation and Interpreting (Salford), an MA degree in Sociology (University of North London), as well as a PhD and a Habilitation in Sociology (University of Bayreuth). He was a Post-Doctoral Fellow at the University of Bayreuth, AGORA-Fellow at the Institute for Advanced Studies in Berlin and a visiting lecturer at Eduardo Mondlane University in Mozambique. His most important publication on Mozambique is The Taming of Fate – Approaches to Risk from a Social Action Perspective – Case Studies from Southern Mozambique (CODESRIA, Dakar, 2017).
