Short Bio

Makafui Awuku is the founder and Chief Executive Officer of social enterprise Mckingtorch Africa. He innovated leather from waste and successfully launched the Mckingtorch Footwear Brand in July 2020. Makafui Awuku has contributed to the Ghana National Waste Management Policy which got launched by the President of Ghana in 2019. In 2018 he sat in meetings with the Board of MasterCard Foundation that led to the approval of 200 million dollars to create 3 million jobs for Ghanaian youth within the next 10 years through their Africa Works Project. He also got invited by University of Brighton in the United Kingdom where he addressed PhD students. In 2020 the University of Michigan selected his project as the first African Business to partner with the Urban Entrepreneurship course as it became a case study for the students which they were graded on. In 2018 during the Royal visit, his work got selected by the British government to be viewed by His Excellency Prince Charles the Prince of Wales when he visited Ghana.

He has also partnered with the Accra Metropolitan Assembly and Rotary Club to install Public Bins in the city of Accra to encourage people to become responsible with plastic waste. Mr. Makafui Awuku is an award winning innovator and entrepreneur. In 2019, his project won a World Bank and Netherlands Government Grant with the Ghana Climate Innovation Center. The project also won a President Obama Young African Leaders Innovation Grant in 2020 and a United Nations Development Program Waste Recovery Innovation Grant in 2020. Makafui Awuku has run training on environmental sustainability for over 2000 people in Ghana and Nigeria over the last 3 years. His works have been documented by Forbes Africa, the British Broadcaster, the German Broadcaster, Brussels Airlines Magazine.
