Mafalda Avelar

Journalist, Portugal

Mafalda de Avelar is a distinguished Portuguese journalist, broadcaster and presenter. An economist by training, she is a graduate of Portugal’s Nova School of Business and Economics (Nova SBE), later gaining her Master’s Degree in International Relations from The School of Advance International Studies (SAIS) at Johns Hopkins University.

Known for her expertise in international as well as economic affairs, Mafalda has lived and worked in several countries including Guinea-Bissau, Brazil, Portugal, America, Denmark, Italy and Belgium. Her international expertise includes significant stints in the editorial offices of Brazilian newspapers Folha de S.Paulo, Gazeta Mercantil, and InvestNews. In Portugal, she has made notable contributions to Diário Económico, Sic Notícias (TV), Expresso and Correio da Manhã.

Mafalda is currently a journalist at Lusa, the Portuguese news agency, where she previously served as Deputy Editor-in-chief. She has been invited to give university guest lectures and to feature as a broadcast commentator on international issues

Mother of 4 boys, Mafalda loves the arts and culture, sports and travelling and is a keen amateur equestrian.
